My ridiculous Christmas wish-list.
Since we’re in the holiday mood, I figured I’d start a list here for certain people. ahem.
-pajama bottoms.
-house shoes.
-a house coat. (Don’t ask.) Campy with little bunnies or hearts is fine. Please avoid polyester.
-A pair of these, size 7B.
-One of these.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, Scott.

Today is October 29.
Have you ordered your holiday cards yet?
Stop looking around - I’m talking to you. Yes, it is still October - but you know what? It’s freakin’ SNOWING in some places, and Target already has their festive Christmas displays up. That’s your cue. If you intend to do photo cards or whatnot, don’t wait until the last minute, ESPECIALLY if you have a child like Rosco who you have to do three separate photo sessions with to get one picture of him looking angelic.
I ordered mine from Minted again this year and I can’t wait to see them! Long-time readers may (or may not) remember I did a review of them last year with Parent Bloggers. Well, I’m giving them another try. The cards are pretty swank, so if I’m going to put my darling boy’s picture in something it needs to be top-notch, eh?
There were a few pesky bugs in their ordering system last year that had me pulling my hair, but they seem to be resolved now. Stay tuned for a 2009 review that’ll probably come next week. Meanwhile, don’t you have some pictures to be taking? G’wan.
...you still here? Well, enjoy these outtakes from the card photos I attempted with Rosco.

Ok, see, I put his hair in a ponytail because I was going to do a close crop of his face and needed to get his hair out of his eyes. Unfortunately, he tried to yank the elastic off. Hmm. He kind of looks like a girl here.

This is a “ROSCO! LOOK AT ME and say CHEESE!” shot.

“What’s this, an acorn? I LOVE acorns!”

whisky tango foxtrot?
I got an email this morning from UNC thanking me for my application, but rejecting me for a position I applied for 3 1/2 years ago.
3 1/2 years ago.
Yeah—let that sink in.

Confession.
Sometimes I forget how to spell my last name when I’m on the phone with people. It’s only when I have to say things like, “No, ‘d as in doll, n as in Nancy’.” I end up inserting extra letters. They probably think I’m a bleeping idiot.
I mean, I have an excuse, right? I’ve only had this one for seven years. My maiden name has four letters and one syllable. Hard to botch that one up.
In other news, last night I had a dream - no - nightmare that I was back in college. Not only that, but there were no textbooks. Our textbooks were our iPhones (*sigh*). The college was somewhere up north (I said it was a nightmare, right?) and out of the 400 people in the lecture hall, only two weren’t wearing black: me, and my friend Christina who lives nearby. We were wearing turquoise. (I know - ?!) All of the Yankees had spiked, heavily-gelled hair. We did not.
Crazy the things that happen in dreams.

Trunk or Treat
One of the things my local mommy group does really well is mobilize people to organize huge events. Yesterday was the third-annual Trunk or Treat.
This year I decided I’d do a trunk. I’ve recently stepped down from some of my group responsibilities because I’m still adjusting to this freelancer’s schedule, and figured I’d do one last volunteer act this year just to show I’m not a complete lazy-ass.
So, I did the Gabba Land trunk per Brianne‘s fantabulous suggestion. No, I did not dress up like DJ Lance Rock, although many MANY people were asking where he was. (Frankly, DJ Lance really is the scariest part of that show. I don’t know if it’s his over-articulated facial expressions, the jumpsuit, or the way he says “a-break it down.”)

The little kids were mesmerized at the trunk. I sort of feel like some of them were staring and waiting for the figurines to start doing a dancey-dance or something, but fortunately no one walked off with a Brobee or Toodee. I promised Rosco he could have the figurines after Trunk or Treat, so they’re now in his possession.
Making the Gabba Land display was a bit of a P.I.A. I underestimated how much time it would take me to put it together. It took at least six hours. I know this because I started listening to a book on tape and when I called it quits the story was over. I went to bed at 2:30 on Saturday night/yesterday morning. Yesterday we finished it off. I did all the background painting and Scott did the accent work and the little ghosts since I have “can’t draw straight” syndrome.
Oh, and the candy. *sigh* Now that Rosco is old enough to understand what candy is (before 2 1/2 or so it was some exotic thing he really wasn’t allowed), he’s carrying it around like pirate booty. Last year I ate it. This year, I’m going to have to throw away a piece per day when he’s not looking. That child does not need any artificial stimulus. Nuh uh.

The funniest thing I’ve heard in days:
“I’m smart, but people don’t know that because I’m kind of ghetto.”

Stoked.
Okay, we decided on the Disney cruise, and to be honest I’m giddy. It’s five months from now, but hopefully by then Rosco will have gotten over this “I whine because it works for Daddy, so I’m going to try it on you, too” crap (yesterday was a day of time-outs-o’-plenty). [Whining is the largest of his transgressions, but it’s one that grates on me like fingernails on a chalkboard. He’s generally a very good kid.]
I’m particularly looking forward to the whole ‘not having to cook for five days’ thing.

Boo?
I need to get cracking. I committed to doing a trunk at my mommy group’s trunk or treat this weekend and I’m still not sure what kind of theme I should go with. I’m sure the kids won’t care if I stand there with a recycled kitty litter bucket filled with glitter, but that’s not all that festive, ya know? I originally thought I should do something with a Wizard of Oz/yellow brick road theme, but figured if I dressed up as the Wicked Witch of the West I’d scare the bejesus out of somebody’s poor baby. So…need to find time to do that in the midst of everything else I have to do.
I came home from running errands today and was slammed at the front door by the smell of sink funk. I had to wash the dishes - couldn’t put it off any longer. Now It’s 4:37 PM and I haven’t started working yet today. So…let me get on that.
But first, here’s a picture of my deteriorating jack-o-lantern. It’s way more scary now than it was a couple weeks ago.

Anyone want a cat?

Oops.
I think we’ve been narrating our trouble with the cats a bit too much around here.
I wore long sleeves to bed last night and woke up a little sweaty (I swim around under the comforter as I sleep). Rosco asked me this morning if the splotch of moisture on my shirt front was cat pee-pee.
Ew.
Anyway, guess who just had his first-ever bowl of Lucky Charms? Yep. I need to go look at the bowl he dumped in the sink and see if it’s filled with oatie bits.
(They were on sale and my coupon stash was pitiful yesterday.)

I succumbed.
I really don’t want to fill up my iPhone with games for Rosco. Doing so would guarantee that I would actually never be able to use the phone for its intended purpose: playing with Facebook for iPhone.
I did go ahead and upgrade to the full version of the iWrite Words game I talked about a couple of weeks ago. I think it does boost letter recognition, and since the words are random you know the kid is learning and not memorizing.
Maybe we should get the kid an iPod Touch so I can have my phone back.

meeska mooska…
The last time I went to Disney it was at Animal Kingdom and I was about five months pregnant with Rosco. It was a zillion degrees outside and I was a veritable bee-yotch (justifiably so, no?). Prior that, the only other time I’d been was when I was in kindergarten. So, my Disney experience isn’t exactly expansive.
Now that Rosco is creeping up on three, we figured it’d be a good age to take him before we have to wait until a second child is old enough to enjoy it. So, the timing is good and I think Rosco would really enjoy it.
We’ve got a couple of options - we can do the parks, or we can take a cruise. I love the idea of a cruise, but my only apprehension is Scott’s height and whether he’d whack himself on the ceilings onboard. It would also be R’s first journey out of the country so we’d have to deal with all that passport garbage.
If we do the parks, we get more bang for the buck, but we could always do the park thing, you know?
I’m about to watch the cruise DVD to see which way I lean.

Can’t hang.
I’m a night owl. Always have been.
The problem is that Rosco goes to bed at around 8 and gets up around 8. Eight is not a good hour for night owls. Eleven or twelve would be more to my liking. I’m struggling to even type this right now.
Thing is, I know you have to make changes when you become a parent and all, but my body clock is specifically programmed for me to be smartest and most efficient between 8 pm and 10 pm. I try to go to bed at a reasonable hour on some nights and end up laying there for two hours tossing and turning (such as last night). The only thing that keeps me in bed is the fact that I chart temperatures and need at least three hours of sleep for a reliable reading (that’ll make no sense to 75% of you).
I’m really not productive until an hour after I’ve had my coffee in the morning. Even then I’m easily distracted. I think I need to reboot my body clock. This is ridiculous and I’m exhausted.

Productivity Killerz.
I really want to up my productivity at home. I hate to sound like a broken record, but because I freelance I only get paid for the work I actually turn in. I really want to sock away some money so we can go to Disney comfortably in the spring (fly or drive? don’t know), but I’ve got a couple of things working against me. Cute things, but productivity killers all the same:
1) The cat that lives on my desk and presses my keyboard buttons:

2) The Rosco that is bringing all his toys into my office and narrating every action he makes. I know he loves me, but I think he would love Disney even more:

And since I took that picture he dumped that bucket of blocks on the floor. I guarantee that in the next three minutes he’ll be asking me to build him something.
My grandmother’s response would have been “G’wan somewhere! Go outside!” but I can’t use that because Rosco doesn’t have an older sibling to
get in trouble with keep an eye on him.
